The Diocese of York is a large Diocese of the Church of England covering a family of 607 churches, 125 schools and 470 parishes.

There are three archdeaconries, which are organised into 470 parishes. Around 320 of the 500 diocesan clergy have housing provided as part of their terms of service. These properties include 237 benefice parsonage houses, 17 diocesan houses and 44 glebe houses.

Whilst the majority of the estate is valued at historic costs, the estimated value of the properties is in excess of £100 million.

The Diocesan estates also include a large property portfolio in the form of glebe land, as well as the York Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) administering parish investments for Custodian Trustee investments and church properties, including over 150 church halls.

The diocesan property team is based in York and has responsibility for the maintenance and administration of the various estates.

Challenge

The diocesan estate’s property records were kept on various spreadsheets with transactions for maintenance works being controlled within the diocesan finance department.

They needed an integrated system that both finance and property management could utilise, providing their team with greater control and reporting.
